Oct 11 | Week 5
The documentary that we were asked to watch this week regarding the Zombie Apocalypse was very insightful. The seriousness of some individuals in regards to preparing and training themselves in case a Zombie attack is a new revelation for me. The political parallels to our society that were drawn through my peers presentations allowed for deeper connections and demonstrated how current events can be seen in a different light. The idea that one day we will need to prepare for a massive disaster is not as foreign as many may think. When a new virus is found, a culture of fear emerges that quickly separates the sick from the non infected. Remembering the SARS virus in 2003, a single cough made many uncomfortable and quickly seek shelter from the potentially infected individual. As well, with the rise of social media covering political issues have caused many to be more suspicious of the behaviour of those in power in the government. Also, as Wiki leaks are becoming common and hackers from the group Anonymous are exposing more and more unethical information that comes from government officials, it is causing people to become nervous that the government might be hiding things like harmful viruses from them. The study of Zombies in the classroom can elicit powerful discussions especially for younger adults, connections to holiday shoppers, Pokemon Go and the election are all topics that can be connected back to Zombies. It is interesting for me to explore this topic further and maybe even explore the Zombie curriculum in my teachings. |
